RFID labels, i.e. RFID tags or RFID transponders come in three versions:

  • No battery, passive RFID tags: receives the energy necessary to operate from the electromagnetic field generated by the reader device. These are the smallest and simplest type of tags.
  • Partially passive RFID tags: have a minimal local power source, are capable of continuous data collection and then the transfer of this data via identification points. For instance: measuring environmental temperature.
  • Active RFID tags: are battery operated, their transmitters can send and receive information from a large range. The battery life can last even up to 5 years, depending on the reading frequency.
